Octobo

Octobo is an interactive smart plush which comes with storybooks, puzzle tokens, and an app library. It reinvents play time for children by changing it into a magical learning adventure. The Octobo plush will giggle if you toss him, sing if you prompt him and even give a child feedback on how well they are learning. It comes with expandable content, so that parents can unlock new features as their children grow or their interests change, and lets parents pick curated songs, stories, and games for their kids that are personally meaningful.

Scope

In 2015, creator Yuting Su set out on a journey to create an interactive toy that could grow and learn with kids whilst providing them with the best of the physical and digital worlds. The goal was to create a plush companion that combines the interactive and stimulating experience of traditional toys with the endless content of a digital library. It would help children learn through interactive storybooks and a wide selection of educational apps.

After the proof of concept was made, Octobo was created, a plush which could fit a tablet inside of it and come to life. In order to become commercially successful however, the app needed a lot of work and optimization. Yuting approached us after having heard of our skills. We were tasked to lead the project and work alongside her team to bring the app to the App Store.

Our Role

Bug Fixing
Optimization

Our team is in charge of architecture and design decisions. Our main responsability is to ensure the app is as future-proof as possible and runs smoothly. We work along a remote team, assigning them tasks, overseeing their code and helping them if needed. Additionally, we have been optimising the app to make it more responsive and reduce friction, so children can interact with the plush seamlessly.

Reception

While Octobo has not been officially released yet, feedback from testers and companies has been amazing. The idea started on crowdfunding websites such as indiegogo, kickstarter and chinese equivalents, and received full funding on every platform. The project was later picked up by the Comcast NBCUniversal Techstars program and while we can’t say much, we can say that the company has a bright future ahead.

“…direct interaction [with Octobo] might have the greatest potential for a true emotional and empathetic experience.”
